Do you think Santa Claus and decorated trees when you think Christmas, right? The Jolly One might first number of a symbol of the party, but there is no doubt that Christmas trees are almost as important in holding the right vacation.
Santa Claus and Christmas trees are so intertwined, so connected, as we celebrate, suggesting that perhaps Santa invented the Christmas tree. After all, Santa Claus is everywhere presents under the tree. Maybe back in the old days, before the trees, is used to put presents under the beds of children in the bathtub. And maybe she finally gave up and instead of inventing the Christmas tree as a fun and comfortable place for him to leave presents. Makes sense, right?
Maybe, but Santa had little to do with the real reason that Christmas trees are produced. Sorry to disappoint people, but it was actually German Christians began the celebration of Christmas trees back in the 1500s. And as for decoration of these trees, the story says that one of the Christians top of them all, Martin Luther, began to decorate your family tree in 1500 with lighted candles. He had the idea of a night walk home under stars.
So the idea really caught on in the mid-1800s, when the Queen of England and his sons, began to decorate a Christmas tree. Sketches of the royal family with their decorations was saved in all major newspapers, and soon all good English was starting a new family tradition: decorating your house and home decorations with colored and smelling fresh, evergreen trees beautifully green.
In the U.S., however, were a little slow, not only with the Christmas tree decoration, but with the celebration of Santa Claus and anything else "extra" in their Christmas celebrations. That's because until the end of the 1800s, Americans saw Christmas as a very religious holiday. There was no place for man chubby red suit, or decorations light and candles, and even a Christmas tree. All Americans did then was go to church. Period.
But then the Queen of England enjoyed your Christmas tree. And many immigrants to the United States, especially Germany's other, held December 25, with trees, lights and Christmas holiday. Finally, the fun was in vogue. In true American fashion, however, Americans not only had the tradition of Christmas trees and decorations, improved in it. Everything had to be bigger, better and more festive!
For example, at the turn of the 20th century, Europeans tend to like their trees, manageable, only about the height of your typical sixth grader. But when the Americans began to capture the tradition of the tree, decided they liked its large trees, so big it touched the roof of their houses.
Then the Americans took a step closer with the invention of electricity in the homes. The trees were twisted yarns colored lights. The houses were covered with decorations of all colors, flashing lights, and statues of Santa Claus with his sleigh reindeer. Even the cities began setting up Santa Claus is displayed throughout City Hall as well as Christmas trees reaching to the sky.
